Introduction to Addison, the Somewhat Fun Ball of Walking Anxiety

My name is Addison and I am a 20 year old Microbiology Major. I was born in Colorado but have lived the last 15 or so years of my life in Oklahoma City. I went to a super small Catholic grade school and then a slightly larger, but still small, inner city public charter school in Oklahoma City so coming to a University as large as OU was definitely jarring. Luckily I went to high school with my best friend who goes to OU now, however, we were not always friends, we did not know each other's names until junior year of high school and really didn't become best friends until college. I even get to work with my best friend at the OU pool. I am a very introverted person so when I do make a good friend I can trust, they mean a great deal to me and I do everything I can to be the best friend to them in return. I also have an amazing boyfriend of 2 years, Sam, who just finished his undergrad in Mechanical Engineering and will start his Master's this fall.

Spring of 2019 Sam and I adopted a tiny "lab" puppy with a big nose from the Norman Humane society, months later I discovered he was Great Dane/ Lab mix or "Labradane." His name is Archie and he is a BIG boy who thinks he is the size of a chihuahua. He is the sweetest boy and my best friend, he knows just what to do when I am not feeling my best. He is also very well behaved... for the most part. What I mean is, he may steal a Triscut from your bowl but he will do it gently and will only take one (true story). One of his favorite snacks are "Coobs" or ice cubes as normal people would say. One of his favorite activities if not THE favorite activity, is naps, he loves to nap and he will curl himself into a little ball and smush his face into you. There are probably hundreds of pictures of Archie I would love to share but I will only share a few favorites.

I could talk about Archie forever, but I should probably talk more about me. I love all sorts of different things and I am decently good at a lot of different things. I am a very eclectic person in my interests. I am a tomboy, I do not like pink, no dresses or skirts unless absolutely necessary, I don't wear make up, I only know how to put my hair in a ponytail and how to straighten it. However, I love skincare, not make up, skincare. My mother has managed a skincare store for years and before that she worked part time when we were little so I have a great respect for taking care of my skin and even make my own scrubs and soaps and such. I am also tomboyish in that I love Minecraft and Assassin's Creed, video games in general, and if you have had more than a couple conversations with me your name is now "dude." In contrast to typical tomboy notions, I love to cook and bake, I love to paint and draw and do crafts, I am no master in the arts but I feel like enjoying what you do makes your work priceless. I also absolutely love movies, my dad and I shared this love of film my entire life, it makes me a great addition to trivia night... seriously I know a little about a lot which is great for trivia. I also love Microbiology. I love virology and epidemiology and genetics, which is ironic given the current events.

  1. Oh, your Archie is adorable, Addison! You can never share too many pet pictures in your blog, I promise. Kind of like the way seeing people's pets is the best part of Zoom, seeing pet pictures is one of the best parts of people's Introductions. Sometimes people write stories about their pets, or even do their whole semester Storybook project about their pet. Here's one about a student's pet hedgehog (yeah, no kidding! she knew all about hedgehogs!): The Brave Hedgehog ... and that is so cool about doing Minecraft; people have done some video-game inspired projects in class but nobody has ever played with Minecraft and storytelling. Maybe that is something you will want to try! And as for epidemiology, well, we all have to know a little something about epidemiology now... and I am guessing we will see plenty of pandemic-related stories in this semester. Storytelling is part of how we will get through this mess I think, along with all the science. I hope you will enjoy the class!

  2. Addison, it's nice to meet you, and your Archie is absolutely a good boy and adorable! I've never played Assassin's Creed, but I've seen a few playthroughs and want to try it for myself; at heart, I would like to consider myself a gamer, but I have a budget of approximately a dollar, so that dream will be a slow one coming. Also, I'm not saying you need to drop the skincare routine, but absolutely drop the skincare routine.

  3. Hi Addison,

I love Archie and I would love to see more pictures and hear more stories! However, I did love learning about you!

I am actually taking Intro to Microbiology this semester, so I have a new appreciation for microbiology majors! It is actually pretty interesting and I like it so far! Any tips for the class?

I look forward to getting to know you--and Archie!--more this fall!

  4. Hi Addison,

Your dog is so cool. I have a dog of my own back at home but he doesn't get to stay with me when I am at school. I can also relate with you because I like to occasionally play video games myself. I used to play minecraft for hours when I was younger. Me and my friends would have so much fun playing that game. Learning about you was very fun and interesting and I am excited to see your storybook when we get further along in this class.

  5. Hi Addison,
Your dog is fun! I'm jealous that you get to have your dog here at school, mine is back home. It seems like you are super passionate about video games which is really cool. I am glad that you have adjusted to the size of OU and have made it home! I am looking forward to reading though your posts throughout the semester!

  6. Hi Addison!

First off, your pup is so stinking cute and I love quirky personality! I wish I could have my dog at my apartment but sadly, that's not always the easiest! I'm absolutely obsessed with movies too! I'm usually the one in my friend group that knows who's in what movie, when it came out, the director, I'm the nerd so I can totally relate to your trivia night feels!

  7. Hey Addison!
Oh my gosh, more dog pictures please! Archie is the cutest. (Just don't tell my dog I said that.) I have a small dog now, but he thinks he is huge! I also love, love, love Assassin's Creed. I am anxiously awaiting Valhalla, which may be the first one my husband actually plays for more than 20 minutes. I am slightly concerned that it comes out just before winter break starts but I am hopeful that I can keep from getting sucked in for a few weeks.

  8. Hi Addison!

Archie is so cute! It's so cool that you have an interest in skincare too. What's your favorite homemade recipe for skin scrub?
It's also cool that you and your dad connect through film because that's how my dad and I connect too! What's your favorite movie to watch?
I also call everyone dude too! My mom actually hates it because she says she's not my dude, but what she doesn't know is that everyone is my dude.
I hope you have a great day!

  9. Hi Addison! I know everyone else has already brought this up but your dog is SERIOUSLY adorable! I have a lab of my own and I've always been a sucker for Great Danes (they're huge dogs and I'm a pretty tall person myself so we just go together). I loved reading about your journey from Colorado to Oklahoma City though!I'm glad you were able to find OU and think of it as your own home. It was nice meeting you!

  10. Hi Addison! First, your dog is so precious. I have a major soft spot for dogs, despite being allergic to all animal hair. As soon as you said the breeds, my jaw dropped at how big that dog has to be! I Think it is super cool that you love biology. It is so much fun to learn about but unfortunately my brain doesn't work like that so I enjoy supporting others instead!

  11. Hey Addison! I'm a microbiology major too! How're you liking the classes? My favorite so far is probably fundamentals, what about you? Your dog is so cute and he grew up so much. Have you tried out Hollow Knight? It's an amazing game I super recommend! Assassin's Creed Valhalla looks like it's going to be good too. Have you tried out Minecraft Dungeons? I want to, but no one I know would play it as well.

  12. Hi Addison,
I am absolutely in love with Archie, he is just so cute. I am so happy that you are able to go to school with your best friend. All of my best friends unfortunately moved to different schools, but still keep in touch daily. I love Assassin's Creed! Which one do you play? I only have the thrid, but Valhalla looks really well done and I would want to get it one day!

  13. Hey Addison! While reading about you and your best friend I found your situation similar to me. I didn't find my real group of girl friends until junior year as well. I had known who they were but through one of my best friends we all jst started hanging out together. It's nice to have those people. Especially since your friend goes to OU as well! I wish some of my friends went here. They all go to school back homein Virginia! As far as video games go I have to admit that I havent played many in a long time. A computer game I keep coming back to is the Sims, do you play? For console games, when I used to live back home with my younger brother who is an avid gamer, I would play all his Batman games for Xbox. What do you play on Xbox or Playstation? Hope you have a great semester.

  14. Hello, I am also from a really small town in Oklahoma and coming to the University it was definitely a culture shock at first but now it is probably the best decision I have made so far. Also, I am in love love with your dog, he is seriously so cute. I am also very tomboyish myself due to me growing up on a farm so I can relate to you quite a bit.

  15. Hi Addison,

Your puppy is so adorable!! I have lived in Oklahoma for like 17 years. I am the opposite in that I am a super girly girl. My room looks like someone throw up pepto bismol. It is super pink, and my favorite things to wear are dresses and skirts. I love skincare too. What do you think are the best skincare products for you?

  16. Hi Addison! Your dog is so cute! Honestly, I'm the same way about friendships too; I've had a lot of friendships that ended badly when I was young that hurt pretty bad. I'm also pretty introverted so it can take a little bit for me to warm up to someone, but once I find a true friend I hold onto them as tight as I can. Hope you have a good semester!

  17. Hey Addison, nice to meet you! As others have mentioned, Archie is a cute doggo! So good to hear that you rescued him. I love that you are very into skin care; I need to be better about taking care of my skin. Do you have any important, basic skin care tips to share? I think it’s awesome that you are passionate about your major. I took my Genetics course with Dr. Wendy Martin and ever since then, I’ve thought genetics was very interesting!

  18. Hi Addison! You dog, Archie, is so cute! His color pattern reminds me of my dog, Oreo. Oreo was a chihuahua so when you said Archie thought he was the size of a chihuahua I thought that was funny because Oreo always thought he was the size of a great Dane. He would always chase bigger dogs and get all mean and feisty around them. I also have been getting into skincare lately. I like watching hyram's youtube video for skincare!

  19. Hi Addison!

Wow! You're little Archie got so big. I also have a dog named Archie, but he's still a tiny (a Yorkie). No matter the size, I love dogs, I could look at pictures of them all day, yours included!
I hope that you enjoy OU, even though it's been a crazy year. You have a huge variety of school experiences it seems like, so this semester will add to your collection lol.
Best of luck with the class, I'm excited to read your stories:)

  20. Hello Addison, it is so nice to virtually meet you! I am an introverted person too, so I know how hard it is to let someone new into your life and I am so glad you find them as a terrific person. Archie is an absolute unit but I bet he is just the goodest boy, I would personally do anything for him. I hope you have a great rest of the semester!
