Time Strategies

The first thing I want to do this course is to work ahead. I have a heavy course load and a busy schedule and find it easy to fall behind. I work behind a computer at my job so I can utilize that extra time when it is slow to do the extra credit or get even further ahead.

As far as time strategies go, the checklist method is one of my preferred methods. The logic behind this is seen in The Psychology of Checklists by Lauren Marchese. I also like to weigh the pros of starting a project now rather than later like in 4 Questions to Help You Overcome Procrastination by Peter Banerjea. I am ADD so I have had to work with time management with almost every aspect of my life. I have this method I use similar to a checklist method. I make a list of all the things I need to do, I usually have a separate list for homework and household. In each list I make a list of the tasks or assignments that need to be done and allot a reasonable time for it to be done in, usually I lean on the side of caution and allot slightly more time than I think I need. I then do each task and write down how long it took me and then set aside the time I had remaining and put that into a sort of mental time bank. I allow myself to withdraw from that mental time bank to do something off road between tasks or I save it all for the end and celebrate the extra time I now have. It sounds tedious but it keeps me on track for the most part.

Time Management
This image is kind of how I feel all the time, except usually I am not as upset since I like having things to do. Not doing something makes me bored and anxious.

Technology Overview

I am Fairly familiar with most of the tech we will be using. Twine is new and so are some of the image editors. I have had some but not extensive knowledge with image editors and website builders. The blogging was completely new for me but I think I have that down for the most part.

Here is a doge meme I thought really suited the topic of the lesson.

Assignments Overview

I am most intrigued by the storybook project it excites me the most. I also plan on doing the Extra Credit I want to test them all out but the Microfictions and the Check in and Connect seem the most interesting. In a similar vein I will share some pictures of Archie to spread some cheer.

Growth Mindset Reflection

I am familiar with the growth mindset just not Carol Dweck. I would like to start with my own personal experiences with the Growth and Fixed mindsets. Pretty much my entire life, the one thing everyone around me told me I was good at academics. I had a very fixed mindset that has stuck with me my entire life. My last year or two of high school became difficult, I was not good at calculus and I received my first grade below a B and I was devastated and since then I have been wary of that since. I went to a School where AP courses were required and I entered college with over a semester's worth of college credit. However, my school had a 100% graduation rate and a 99% continuing education. There were 101 kids in my class and 33 went to OU, 2 went to Cornell, 1 Georgetown, 1 Syracuse, and 1 Notre Dame. I received the second highest scholarship to OU and got into every college I applied to with scholarships. But it didn't feel like I was good enough, I was JUST one of the 33 kids going to OU. I wasn't validated and that crushed me, the school's high pressure for success is the only thing I can complain about but it's a pretty big thing. Now I have since learned that I define my success and I am proud to attend OU. The first two years of college have been rough, I didn't know how to recover from not succeeding immediately and that stuck with me. I had a great full tuition scholarship, key word being HAD. Once I had my first non-success I just assumed I just wasn't good enough and my performance reflected that belief, and I lost part of that scholarship. I can get it back and I am very close to it, over the last couple of months I have been trying to embrace the growth mindset. It is HARD. Going two decades with a fixed mindset and undergoing a pandemic while trying to self improve is insanely difficult but I am getting there.

I have had secondary experience with the growth mindset. My parents had that mindset with my younger sister. I don't think they chose one way or the other, it just kind of happened that way. I do not know how it personally affects her but I could definitely see more of the "not yet" attitude that Carol Dweck discusses. She is a senior at the same high school I went to, I am not sure how exactly that pressure to go to a prestigious university and things like that affect her, but I have no doubt that it does. She is the most kind and caring person I know, she cares about everyone and everything especially animals. She struggled and still struggles to find her own voice just like most people but what sets her apart is that she wants to help give that voice to other people who cannot do it on their own and she has already started. She does not want to go to college and attends a school that has a 99% rate of continuing education. She wants to jump into the world and get straight to helping others. I am so proud of how she has managed to define her own success with the growth mindset and I wish I had the guts to do what she does. It doesn't mean I don't have the guts but as Carol Dweck says, "not yet."

Do's and Don't's of the Growth Mindset

I resonate with this image because for most of my life I was part of the Don't column.

Introduction to Addison, the Somewhat Fun Ball of Walking Anxiety

My name is Addison and I am a 20 year old Microbiology Major. I was born in Colorado but have lived the last 15 or so years of my life in Oklahoma City. I went to a super small Catholic grade school and then a slightly larger, but still small, inner city public charter school in Oklahoma City so coming to a University as large as OU was definitely jarring. Luckily I went to high school with my best friend who goes to OU now, however, we were not always friends, we did not know each other's names until junior year of high school and really didn't become best friends until college. I even get to work with my best friend at the OU pool. I am a very introverted person so when I do make a good friend I can trust, they mean a great deal to me and I do everything I can to be the best friend to them in return. I also have an amazing boyfriend of 2 years, Sam, who just finished his undergrad in Mechanical Engineering and will start his Master's this fall.

Spring of 2019 Sam and I adopted a tiny "lab" puppy with a big nose from the Norman Humane society, months later I discovered he was Great Dane/ Lab mix or "Labradane." His name is Archie and he is a BIG boy who thinks he is the size of a chihuahua. He is the sweetest boy and my best friend, he knows just what to do when I am not feeling my best. He is also very well behaved... for the most part. What I mean is, he may steal a Triscut from your bowl but he will do it gently and will only take one (true story). One of his favorite snacks are "Coobs" or ice cubes as normal people would say. One of his favorite activities if not THE favorite activity, is naps, he loves to nap and he will curl himself into a little ball and smush his face into you. There are probably hundreds of pictures of Archie I would love to share but I will only share a few favorites.

Goofy Archie Stare

I could talk about Archie forever, but I should probably talk more about me. I love all sorts of different things and I am decently good at a lot of different things. I am a very eclectic person in my interests. I am a tomboy, I do not like pink, no dresses or skirts unless absolutely necessary, I don't wear make up, I only know how to put my hair in a ponytail and how to straighten it. However, I love skincare, not make up, skincare. My mother has managed a skincare store for years and before that she worked part time when we were little so I have a great respect for taking care of my skin and even make my own scrubs and soaps and such. I am also tomboyish in that I love Minecraft and Assassin's Creed, video games in general, and if you have had more than a couple conversations with me your name is now "dude." In contrast to typical tomboy notions, I love to cook and bake, I love to paint and draw and do crafts, I am no master in the arts but I feel like enjoying what you do makes your work priceless. I also absolutely love movies, my dad and I shared this love of film my entire life, it makes me a great addition to trivia night... seriously I know a little about a lot which is great for trivia. I also love Microbiology. I love virology and epidemiology and genetics, which is ironic given the current events.

Storybook Favorites

Bedtime Stories

This storybook tells what appears to be Hebrew folklore in a way that makes you feel like a traveler at a local inn meeting the subjects of the folklore. They do a wonderful job introducing the topic and creating the weary traveler vibe. I play Dungeons & Dragons so I do love a good "foreign traveler at the local inn" scene. The stories are also well told. The theme has crackling fire sounds attached to it as well as a blue color scheme with star imagery to create the bedtime story feel. I really liked this one, it drew me in with the title alone but the rest of the details made standout.

Camelot ER

This storybook tells the tales of the Knights of Camelot through the eyes of Emergency Room staff. I like the way it is formatted like a formal medical report with more detail of how the injury was sustained. When it is done like this, the main story gets told in the process. They did a great job introducing the storybook and keeping the notion of these being patient reports by ensuring that these should be kept private and only be viewed by medical personnel. The layout and theme of the blog also gave me the feel that a hospital's website or database would look like. I especially enjoyed this one as I once wanted to pursue a career in the medical field.

Waffle House: Creating Magic in Ancient Egypt

This storybook tells of the myths of Ancient Egypt by connecting a social common ground of our time, 24/7 breakfast chain Waffle House, as one from Ancient Egypt. I like the use of a place where many people have made many late night memories as the local common ground. They do a good job introducing the topic almost like the beginning of a documentary. I especially liked the detail about the archaeological uncovering of the Waffle House. I also liked the theme, it was easy yo navigate and included theme music.https://sites.google.com/view/syrup-and-stories/home

My Favorite Places: Colorado

I was born in Colorado and most of my family still lives there so I will show pictures of some of my favorite parts of Colorado.
Personal
Thornton, CO
This is a personal image from 3/19/2020 of my grandparent's house when it ended up getting 8 inches of snow by the end of the day.
Mount Olivet Cemetery Wheatridge, CO
My favorite place is not necessarily this cemetery. Wheatridge is the town I first lived in after I was born. Wheatridge has a high Italian American population of which my family is a part of. The cemetery pictured is where most of my paternal family is buried and is probably one of the only places that bear great meaning to me even though I am not a spiritual or religious person.
Aerial View of Arvada, CO
My dad grew up in Arvada and my grandparents lived here the first half of my life.
